Molecular-weight dependent thermal diffusion in dilute polymer solutions.
نویسنده
چکیده
Thermal diffusion of high polymers in a continuous medium is independent of the molecular weight Mw. Accounting for the solvent molecular structure and the Brownian motion of the solute, we derive an additional contribution of opposite sign which is significant for short chains but vanishes as Mw-->infinity. Our findings explain the dependence on Mw observed recently for polystyrene, and its inverse Soret effect at very small Mw. Moreover, they bridge the gap between the macroscopic hydrodynamics description for large solutes and the enthalpy-of-transport picture for small molecules.

We present a kinetic model of crystal growth of polymers of finite molecular weight. Experiments help to classify polymer crystallization broadly into two kinetic regimes. One is observed in melts or in high molar mass polymer solutions and is dominated by nucleation control with G approximately exp(1/TDeltaT), where G is the growth rate and DeltaT is the supercooling. The other is observed in ...
متن کاملThe Shear Rheology of Semi-dilute Dna Solutions
Dilute polymer solutions and polymer melts in shear flow have been extensively studied experimentally and theoretically. However, a systematic experimental study to understand the influence of concentration, temperature and molecular weight on the rheology of semidilute polymer solutions is currently lacking. Such knowledge is of crucial importance in a number of industrial and biological conte...
متن کاملTemperature and concentration dependence of diffusion coefficient in dilute solutions*
Temperature and molecular weight dependence of k o in D(C)=D(O)[1 +CkD], where D(C) is the diffusion coefficient for the density fluctuations in a dilute polymer solution, is investigated by first expressing D(C) as a function of the static structure factor S(q,C) within the framework of the Kirkwood-Riseman theory. The continuous transition of k D from negative values under theta conditions to...
